Hervey Bay; Urangan

Tues 3 to Mon 9 August 2010

I Give Up
I promise to be good from now on or at least not as bad.
A mini Fraser Island

A powerful RIB

A week at  Hervey Bay Marina for our 35ft yacht was $231 and hence not bad value with good facilities and good restaurants on the dock.. Watching the whale watch boats come in & out everyday was interesting. Some skippers of these boats are clapped at the end just before passengers disembark, but so far this has not happened aboard Saaremaa (obviously the crew do not realise what a stirling job the skipper is doing). It is amazing how many boats are involved and how many people turn up every day with several of the boats going out twice a day and the big speedy RIB 'Awsome' going 3 times a day.
A less powerful RIB
With 1200 HP at its disposal' Awsome' is a tad bigger and gutsier than Muhu so we will not race it out to the whales and at $500,000 we are not thinking of upgrading our RIB just yet.

Aah!! Beautiful yellow

The nearest good shopping for provisions is a 15 min walk to Urangan Central and there is a bus every hour. Torquay (we did not see Fawlty Towers anywhere nor Basil or Sybil). However 'Asbestos Manor' painted a delightful yellow is one mans obsession with council authority and maybe he is related to Basil!!! It is a pretty expensive way to have a whinge.

For a mere $5 million one could own such a property according to the sign. Apparently the owner lives in the house and is upset about some development or other. The neighbours must be truly impressed to live next door to such a tasteful property.

When the tide goes out, it goes a long way hence the long pier for at Urangan for the export of timber, sugar and other goodies from the area in earlier times.

Its a bit hard on the bum
Whilst here we bought 2 new 120 Amp/Hour batteries and ordered screens for the hatches to keep the bitey critters out. These sand fly bites are the itchiest we have come across. Waiting around one has to relax hence Michael is working hard at it in the hammock.
The Adams 40 just behind in the picture is in a very sorry state. Its a round bilge steel yacht that has languished in the pen for 6yrs with severe rust and bits just falling off. Why someone would keep paying $5000 a year for a boat to rust away and not be used is a mystery. However on our travels we have come across a number of boats in the same situation.

The pylon has shrunk

Big tides here are shown by the poles in the marina with the caps up in the sky at LT but around chest high at HT, 4m tides are a bit more than we are used to.

The top is right up there!! Its Grown.

A bit of Michael's arty stuff follows.

  1. Hi Anne and Michael - we are enjoying your travel saga and witty stories. Seems like you are certainly enjoying the cruise (apart from the beasties and sandflies etc). We are contemplating our first outside cruise to Newcastle this weekend - not much of a deal for you old salts! Hope fair weather continues and you keep safe.
